Year 1
Welcome to Year 1 at South Wellfield. Building on the strong foundations established in Reception, we are committed to providing a smooth and successful transition into Key Stage 1. We understand that children do not suddenly stop learning through play, exploration and active experiences when they leave Reception. That is why our Year 1 curriculum and environment remain closely aligned with the best elements of Early Years practice. We use continuous provision during the first half term and, where needed, beyond, responding to the needs of each class to ensure children feel secure, confident and ready for the increasing demands of the Key Stage 1 curriculum.
Through high-quality teaching, practical learning experiences and carefully planned opportunities for independence, we nurture critical thinkers and curious, resilient learners who are excited to discover more about the world around them. As always, our approach is underpinned by The Wellfield Way: Safe. Respectful. Ready.
Highlights of Year 1
Year 1 is packed with exciting experiences and memorable opportunities. Children enjoy visits to Alnwick Castle, sing on stage at The Glasshouse, and take part in regular Forest School sessions where they develop confidence, teamwork and a love of the outdoors. Alongside these experiences, children engage in a range of enrichment activities that bring learning to life and create lasting memories throughout the year.
