Writing
At South Wellfield First School, we believe that reading is at the heart of learning. Through our carefully planned, book-based curriculum, we inspire a love of reading while developing the skills children need to become confident readers, writers and communicators.
Our English journey begins in Nursery, where children develop early communication, imagination and fine motor skills through Story Dough. This progresses into Drawing Club in Reception, which has been carefully woven into our book-based curriculum to encourage storytelling, vocabulary development and a love of books from an early age.
As children move through school, they will experience a diverse range of stories, poems and non-fiction texts, to broaden their vocabulary, enrich their cultural capital and encourage them to develop empathy, curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world around them. The carefully selected book spine ensures that children encounter a range of authors, genres, cultures and perspectives.
By placing stories and literature at the centre of learning, we aim to nurture children who are enthusiastic readers, confident writers and lifelong lovers of books. To explore our curriculum please see the document below.
Our Lesson Structures
Each English lesson follows a similar structure to provide consistency across school and reduce cogntive load on our children.
We have created our own English Vocabulary booklet which explains all the vocabulary our children will meet as they move through the curriculum.
