STEAM Week

This year we celebrated our very first STEAM week, during this week our learning focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Maths. We have chosen to include the Arts as well as the traditional STEM subjects as we want to raise the profile of the Arts across school and World Book Day lies perfectly within this week providing a great outlet for creativity.

The thread running through our STEAM week has been ‘How do we make South Wellfield Shine Brightly?’  We chose this theme as we are looking to develop our outside areas and Forest School Each year group had their own scientific question to answer related to how to make ourselves or our school environment Shine Brightly. They also had their own design challenge as well as World Book day Activities and a Maths morning.

Nursery

Our Nursery children were investigating – How can we make colourful rocks that won’t wash away? They then were asked to design and make a coloured rock to make our outside areas more colourful. They also took part in some some planting.

Year 1

Year 1 have been investigating How can we make our outside area wildlife friendly? The children then designed and made bird feeders and a bug hotel as well as planting trees in our new Forest School area.

Year 3

Year 3 have been investigating - How can we make the most of our water? The children designed and made a rain watcher catcher. They also painted tyres and pallets for our outdoor area.

Reception

Reception have also been investigating materials that are waterproof and planting around school.

Year 2

Year 2 have been investigating - How can we get the most out of steps?  They then designed their own fitness activity and chalked it onto the playground. Later in the week the children planted flowers to brighten up our entrance.

Year 4

Year 4 have been investigating - How and when can we grow our own produce? The children researched the seasonality of vegetables and planted their own vegetables in the school garden.
