Nursery

At South Wellfield, children can begin their education journey from the age of 3 in our nursery. We have recently expanded our Nursery provision to accommodate two classes, Bumblebees and Blue Butterflies. This has enabled us to have a flexible space which can transform from two smaller, cosy classroom spaces providing a safe, nurturing environment to a larger open plan space providing more learning opportunities and child interactions. The space is split into 5 different areas:

The Reading Nook - Links to the Well Read strand of our vision. A designated area to relax with your favorite book.

The Bay - Links to the Well Connected strand of our vision. An opportunity for our children to explore sand and water.

The Playhouse - Links to the Well Nurtured strand of our vision. The children can play in our home corner, perform on the stage using the instruments, dress up or explore the small world.

The Gallery - Links to the Well Rounded strand of our vision. To help develop our children's fine motor skills they will be able to exercise their fingers in the malleable area or pick up paints or pencils in our mark making area.

The Workshop - Links to the Well Equipped strand of our vision. From block play to large construction, wood work to the investigation station, children can build and create to their hearts content.

In addition to these areas our Nursery benefits from the Hive which is a calm, sensory space where children can relax and regulate whenever they need to.

A Day in Nursery

A nursery day runs from 8:40 until 3:10 and can be split into two 3 hour sessions, 8:40 - 11:40 or 12:10 - 3:10. The Bumblebees and Butterflies will come into their own classrooms in the morning and self register by putting their own Bumblebee or Blue Butterfly on the wall. During the day they will experience a range of adult-led sessions where they learn to listen attentively through stories and songs as well as having plenty of opportunity to explore the many areas set up, providing different learning opportunities both indoors and out. As the year progresses children will begin maths work, counting and recognising numbers and shapes as well as learning sounds and letter recognition through our phonics programme.

The children will have snack time in the morning which is a great opportunity for the children to sit together and develop their communication and language skills whilst enjoying their milk and snack. The children go the the main hall for lunch at 11:30am, whilst those going home will have story time with their teacher before pick up.

Children in Nursery also benefit from our new Forest School which they will visit every fortnight. If your child loves the outdoors they will have access to our well resourced outdoor classroom everyday and they will also have the opportunity to visit our front yard which is a designated physical development space.

Our aim is for children to develop imaginatively and creatively through play in the different areas in Nursery and this will equip them with the skills for the next stage into Reception.
